Description Rhizomes long-creeping, often very slender, sometimes forming dense patches; shoots 2–3 per tuft; roots pale; scales red-brown, shiny, with sharp points, persistent. Stems 20–50 cm, rough above, trigonous, slender. Leaves 15–40 cm × 1.5–2 mm, rough, flat, gradually tapering to a fine point, ± glaucous, grey-brown on decay, often overwintering; hypostomous; sheaths red or red-purple, becoming brown, often persistent and fibrillose on splitting, with inner face hyaline; apex concave; ligule 1–2 mm, acute to obtuse, tubular, entire. Inflorescence 1/6 or less of stem length; upper bracts setaceous, lower leaf-like, ± equalling the inflorescence, the lowest not or shortly sheathing. Male spikes 1–2, 12–25 mm; male glumes 4–5 mm, elliptic-ovate, red-brown with paler midrib and hyaline margin, apex ± acute, often apiculate. Female spikes 1–2, contiguous, 5–14 mm, oblong-ovoid to subglobose; female glumes 2–3 mm, ovate to subrotund, purple- or red-brown with pale midrib, apex acute or lowermost in spike mucronate.
