[A species intermediate between the Paludosae and Vesicariae sections, it resembles the former in its mature leathery perigynia and the shape of the staminate scales; however, I place it in the latter section due to its styles strongly geniculate at the base and its perigynia abruptly contracted into a long, cylindrical beak. Moreover, it is quite distinct from all known species in these two sections.] [details]

Original description Rhizoma stoloniferum, subcaespitosum; stolones abbreviati robusti. Caules (inflorescentia non computata) circ. 50 cm. alti, basi foliosi, acute, triquetri, sub inflorescentia omnino laeves. Folia culmum aequantes, 4-8 mm. lata parce septato-nodosa, striato-nervosa. Axis inflorescentiae acute triquetra dense in angulis serrulato-hispidula, scaberrima; internodio inferiore 3,5-4,5 cm. longo, caeteri valde abbreviati, bracteae breviter (1-4 cm.) vaginatae lineares. Inflorescentia abbreviata densa e spicis 4-6, erectis, pedunculis 5-12 mm. longis cylindraceis, foemineis 4-7 mm. longis, 8-10 mm. crassis, purpurascentibus; masculis semper solitariis 3-5 cm. longis, 5-6 mm. latis purpureo et viride variegatis. Squamae foeminae atropurpureae in dorso angustissime virides, 3 mm. longae, 1 mm. latae, anguste ellipticae abrupte in cuspidem contracta 1-2 mm. longam. Utriculi squamas (cuspide comprehensa), aequantes vel superantes, 3-4 mm. longi, horizontaliter patentes, densissimi, in axi subverticillate inserti, ovati apice abrupte in rostrum 1 mm. longum subcylidraceum apice breviter bicuspidatum, cuspidibus parum divaricatis laevibus, basi in stipitem 0,5-1 mm. longum angustati nitidi, longitudinaliter crebre et crassicuscule nervosi anguste vesciculosi e coriacei, virides sed ad apicem et in rostro purpurei. Achenium obovatum, acute triquetrum minute rugosum, fusce flavum, apice rotundatum in stilum basi eximie flexuosum, decurrens, 1,2 mm. longum, 0,8 mm. latum. [details]

Translation Rhizome stolonifère, subcespiteux ; stolons courts et robustes. [details]

Translation Rhizome stoloniferous, subcespitose; stolons short and robust. Stems (excluding inflorescence) approximately 50 cm tall, leafy at the base, sharply angled, triquetrous, completely smooth below the inflorescence. Leaves same length as the stem, 4 to 8 mm wide, slightly septate-nodulose, with parallel veins. Inflorescence axis sharply triquetrous, densely serrulate-hispidulate at the angles, very scabrous; lower internode 3.5 to 4.5 cm long, the others very short, bracts short-sheathing (sheath 1 to 4 cm long), linear. Inflorescence short and dense, with 4 to 6 erect, long-cylindrical spikes, peduncles 5 to 12 mm long, female spikes 4 to 7 mm long and 8 to 10 mm thick, purplish; male spikes always solitary, 3 to 5 cm long and 5 to 6 mm wide, variegated purple and green. Female scales 3 mm long by 1 mm wide, dark purple with a narrow green band on the back, narrowly elliptical and tapering abruptly into a 1 to 2 mm long awn. Pistillate scales (including awn) equal to or exceeding the perigynium. Perigynia elliptical, 3 to 4 mm long, horizontally speading, very densely arranged, insertion sub-verticillate on the axis of the spikes, abruptly contracted into a sub-cylindrical beak 1 mm long ending in two short, slightly divergent, smooth teeth. Base of perigynia ending in a narrow stipe 0.5 to 1 mm long. Perigynia shiny, narrow vesicular in shape and leathery, green but purple at the apex and in the beak, with numerous thick longitudinal veins.
