Description Rhizome short, woody. Culms densely tufted, lateral, 40–70 cm tall, bluntly trigonous, smooth, at the base with pale-brown persistent leaf sheaths, split into fibrous strips. Leaves shorter than the culms, or sometimes nearly as long; leaf blades 6–18 mm wide, herbaceous, flat-spreading, rough on the back and on the margins. Bracts short-leafy or short setaceous, shorter than the spikes, with a sheath, sheath 4–12 mm long. Spikes 5 or 6, distant from each other; terminal spike male, club-shaped cylindrical, 2–6 cm long, 2–4 mm wide; lateral spikes female, with a male portion at the apex, cylindrical, 1.5–5 cm long, 5–7 mm wide, flowers densely arranged, peduncles of spikes usually enclosed within the bract sheaths. Male glumes oblanceolate, 5.5–6.5 mm long, greenish-white, apex acute, with 3 faint yellowish mid-nerves on the back. Female glumes long-ovate, about 4.5 mm long, greenish-white, apex gradually acuminate, with 3 green mid-nerves on the back. Utricles obovoid-globose, bluntly trigonous, slightly inflated, 4.5–5.5 mm long, nearly as long as the female glumes, pale yellowish-green, membranous, with many fine veins, base gradually narrowed, apex gradually narrowed into a beak 1.2–1.5 mm long, beak mouth with 2 minute teeth. Nutlets somewhat loosely enclosed in the utricles, obovoid-globose, trigonous, 2–2.2 mm long, chestnut-brown, apex abruptly constricted into an annular disc, base with a short stipe; base of style slightly thickened; stigmas 2 or 3. [details]
