Description Rhizomes far-creeping, dark purplish. Stems up to 60 cm × 1.1–2.2 mm, tufted, ± terete, smooth, ± inflated, brittle, circular in cross-section, bright green, becoming ridged when dry; stomata guard cells (Figure A1) longer than adjacent subsidiary cells. Leaves reduced to bladeless sheaths up to 9 cm long, brownish with reddish tinge, paler above; apex ± truncate. Inflorescence a single, terminal, ovoid, lanceoloid-ovoid or often distinctly conical spikelet; spikelet 5–20 × 3–8 mm. Glumes 2–3 × 1–1.5 mm, c. 40 but up to 107 per spikelet, ovate, obtuse, often caducous when in fruit, with sides dark reddish-brown, paler towards base; margins narrowly hyaline; midrib pale brown; the 2 lowest glumes empty, each surrounding ± half the base of the spikelet. Flowers bisexual; perianth bristles (4–)5(–6), usually much longer than nut; stamens 3, with anthers 0.9–1.2 mm long; stigmas 2. Nuts 1–1.5 × 1.1–1.5 mm, obovate or elliptic-obovate, biconvex, yellowish to pale brown; style-base persistent, deltoid or more narrowly triangular in outline, flattened, with an acute apex, not confluent with nut. [details]
