Description Tallos muy escábridos, robustos, generalmente rectos. 2n = 58*. [details]

Description Rhizomes short; shoots densely tufted; roots brown; scales brown with black veins, soon becoming fibrous. Stems 10–85 cm, often stout and rough just below inflorescence especially when in fruit, obtusely trigonous and even polygonal below. Leaves 7–45 cm × 2–4 mm, keeled, gradually tapering to a flat tip, mid green; hypostomous; sheaths forming a short false stem; apex straight or concave; ligule 2–3.5 mm, ovate. Inflorescence 1–4 cm × 9–11 mm; bracts glumaceous, lowest setaceous and divaricate, up to 30 mm long. Spikes 4–8, upper contiguous, lowest separated by up to 10 mm, 5–10 mm, globose, sessile, male at top, female below, or lower entirely male. Male glumes 3–4 mm, elliptic, red-brown; apex acute. Female glumes 2.5–3.5 mm, markedly shorter than utricles, dark or red-brown, making, at flowering time and when half-ripe, a strong colour contrast with the green utricles; apex apiculate. Utricles 3.8–4.6 mm, less than twice as long as wide, ovate-orbicular with a broad margin, healthy mid green, becoming dark red-brown to black and shiny as fruit matures; beak c. 0.75 mm, abruptly contracted, minutely toothed; stigmas 2; nut orbicular-compressed. [details]
