Comparison Carex miyabei var. miyabei has male spikes usually without 1-3 female flowers; upper female spikes nearly sessile; female glumes oblong-ovate, without mucro or muticous at apex; and utricles hispidulous. [details]

[details]

[details]

Diagnosis A type differt spiculis superioribus 1—2 ♂ paullo remotis basi saepe 1—3 floribus femineis, ♀ superioribus saepe breviter pedunculatis; squamis ♀ lanceolatis utriculo brevioribus vel longioribus; uticulis albo pubescentibus imprimis superioribus.

[The difference from the original variety lies in the top 1–2 spikelets being male, often bearing 1–3 female flowers at their base, while the upper female spikelets typically possess short pedicels. The female flower scales are lanceolate, shorter than or longer than the utricle; the utricle is covered with white pubescence, particularly noticeable in the upper part.] [details]

Distribution Carex miyabei var. miyabei occurs in Japan and Korea. Carex miyabei var. maopengensis occurs in the province of Anhui in China. [details]

Translation Plants with long, robust rhizomes, ca. 1–2.5 mm in diameter. Culms 45–60 cm tall, slightly subtrigonal, upper part scabrous, often leafy, below middle covered with leaf sheaths; basal sheaths without blades, pale reddish brown, slightly reticulate-fissured on ventral surface or margin. Leaves longer than culms, flat, 3–5 mm wide, somewhat thin yet rigid, rough above and along margins. Spikelets 5–6, with upper 1–2 male spikelets slightly separated, linear, 1–3 cm long, ca. 2 mm wide; male spikelets often bearing 1–3 female flowers at base. The remaining spikelets are female, cylindrical, 2–6 cm long, 4–5 mm wide, densely and profusely flowered, flowers becoming sparser toward the base; the uppermost female spikelet sometimes bears a few male flowers at its apex. Upper spikelets often have short pedicels, while lower ones have short or longer pedicels; pedicels filiform, slightly rough, erect. Lower bracts foliaceous, often exceeding the inflorescence, without sheaths, but with a membranous auricle at the base enveloping the culm, or occasionally the lowest bract with a short sheath; female flower scales lanceolate, 3.5–5 mm long, pale brown, dark reddish-brown on both sides, with 3 veins, margin narrowly white, apex acuminate, slightly rough; male flower scales pale brown, apex obtuse-rounded; Utricle obliquely spreading, ovoid-trigonous, ca. 4 mm long, membranous, yellowish-brown, with few veins, covered with white pubescence, especially conspicuous distally, base cuneate, upper part with a medium-length slender columnar beak ending in two slightly scabrous teeth slightly curved outward; Nuts closely enclosed by utricle, ovoid-trigonal, ca. 1.8 mm long, apex with slightly curved short beak, base slightly thickened, stigma 3. [details]
