Description Rhizomes short; shoots in ± dense tufts 10–20 cm across; roots thick, grey brown; scales dark brown with black veins, soon becoming fibrous. Stems 25–75 cm, slender, trigonous, striate, often drooping. Leaves up to 75 cm × 2–3 mm, flat or channelled, flaccid, gradually tapered to a fine, flat apex, grey, the upper face yellowish-green when young, bronze- or grey-green and usually very glossy when mature, often overwintering; hypostomous; sheaths forming false stems in sterile shoots, lower pale brown, ribbed; inner face hyaline; apex straight or ± concave; ligule c. 2 mm, obtuse, with free tissue hyaline, c. 0.3 mm wide. Inflorescence 6–18 cm; lower bracts setaceous, 2–3 cm, sometimes much longer, upper glumaceous. Spikes 5–8, the upper contiguous, unbranched, ovoid, 3–8 mm, with 4–10 florets, all female (or male in late-season specimens), the lower distant from each other by 2 cm or more, 5–15 mm, often branched, male at top and female below, then with fewer utricles. Male glumes 3.5–4 mm, lanceolate, ± hyaline; apex acute. Female glumes 3–3.5 mm, ovate-elliptic, ± hyaline or pale brown with hyaline margins and green midrib; apex acute, often attenuate. Utricles 3.5–4(–4.5) mm, ± erect or appressed to stem axis, ellipsoid to diamond-shaped (i.e. tapered and ± straight-sided), faintly nerved at base, shiny, pale yellow or whitish-green, turning dull greyish-black; beak c. 1 mm, rough, split; stigmas 2; nut obovoid, biconvex.
