Description Rhizomes short, with 4 to many tufted shoots; roots pale brown and pink- or grey-brown scales becoming fibrous. Stems 5–40 cm, trigonous-terete and straight. Leaves 15–40 cm × 0.8–3.4 mm, rigid, spreading or erect, flat or ± channelled with a midrib rounded beneath, gradually narrowed to a trigonous blunt tip, yellow- to grey-green, becoming pale grey-brown and persistent on dying, sometimes overwintering; hypostomous; sheaths white or hyaline, becoming grey-brown and persistent; apex of inner face straight; ligule c. 1 mm, rounded, tubular. Inflorescence up to 3/4 the length of the stem, with leaf-like bracts stiff, spreading but rarely deflexed, much exceeding the inflorescence. Male spike 1, 5–20 mm, often pushed over by developing female spike; male glumes c. 4 mm, oblong-lanceolate, orange-brown with pale or green midrib, apex acute. Female spikes 2–5, 5–10 mm, ovoid, upper contiguous and sessile, lower occasionally remote and pedunculate; female glumes 1.5–3 mm, ovate, pale yellow-brown with green midrib, apex subacute. Utricles 2–3 mm, obovoid to ellipsoid, abruptly or gradually contracted into beak, faintly nerved, yellow-green, slightly inflated or not; beak 0.25–1 mm, straight or only slightly deflexed, split; stigmas 3; nut obovoid, trigonous. [details]
