Distribution Central American Cordillera, from north Honduras to Nicaragua, also in the Sierra de Talamanca in Costa Rica.
Etymology The epithet mesoamericana refers to Central America, from the Greek meso-, middle.
Description Culms 120–160 cm × 2–3 mm. Basal sheaths brownish. Leaves at least 60–100 cm × 4.6–12.1 mm largest one, oldest ones brownish at the base. Inflorescence racemose, 13–25 cm long, with (15)45–70 lateral spikes, spreading or dropping. Proximal-most bract 10–25 cm × 2–3 mm, subequal to the inflorescence. Spikes 2.8–6.8 cm × 3.6–6.7 mm, linear, densely flowered, the distal 1/4 staminate, unbranched, with about 80–150 female flowers, peduncles sometimes scabrous, subequal or shorter than the spikes. Pistillate glumes 2.3–4.4 × 0.8–1.2 mm, lanceolate, acute, awn 0.2–0.9 mm, purplish-black. Stigmas 3. Utricles 3.3–3.6 × 0.9–1.1 mm, narrowly elliptic, smooth, nerves raised, constricted at the apex into a 0.9–1.2 mm long straight beak, smooth, bidentate, teeth 0.2–0.7 mm long. Nutlets 2.4–2.6 × 0.7–1.1 mm, elliptical, usually not invaginated. [details]
