Description Rhizomes far-creeping, often thick (< 4 mm); shoots clustered; roots pale brown or red-brown; scales brown, dull, becoming fibrous or persistent and blackish in anaerobic soils. Stems 10–40(–60) cm, slender, trigonous, smooth below, rough on angles above. Leaves up to 60 cm × 1–2(–3) mm, stiffly erect, usually inrolled, gradually tapering to a fine trigonous point, pale green to glaucous; amphistomous; sheaths pale biscuit-brown, with inner face hyaline, thin and persistent; apex straight; ligule 1–3 mm, rounded. Inflorescence 1/6–1/3 length of stem; bracts leaf-like, canaliculate, often stiff and patent, the lowest overtopping the inflorescence. Male spikes (1–)2–3(–4), linear, (5–)20–50 mm; male glumes 3–5 mm, obovate-oblong, purple-brown with wide, pale midrib; apex obtuse or subacute with narrow hyaline margin. Female spikes (1–)2–4, (7–)20–50 mm, oblong-cylindric, clustered, subsessile, erect, ± contiguous or lowest sometimes distant with short peduncle; female glumes 1.5–3 mm, elliptic to oblong-ovate, red-brown to black with wide green midrib and hyaline margin; apex obtuse and acuminate, becoming shortly aristate in lower florets of lowest spike. Utricles 3.5–5 mm, broader and longer than glumes, ovoid-ellipsoid, grey-green, often with fine purple-brown spots and 3 or more distinct nerves on adaxial face; beak almost absent, truncate; stigmas 2; nut ellipsoid, biconvex.
