Description Rhizomes far-creeping; shoots usually single, at about every fourth node; roots pale brown, much branched; scales dark brown, soon becoming fibrous. Stems 10–90 cm, rough towards the top, trigonous, often curved, varying in thickness. Leaves up to 60 cm × 1.5–3.5 mm, ± flat, rigid, thick, rough above, often recurved and keeled or channelled in open habitats, tapering gradually to a fine trigonous point, shiny, dark green, often dark brown on dying; base frequently with a small scarious flange on either side; hypostomous; lower sheaths pale brown or grey-brown, persistent, with inner face a loose hyaline membrane, densely mamillate (appearing as a velvet sheen), becoming brown; apex straight; ligule 3–5 mm, obtuse, tubular. Inflorescence a dense head up to 8 cm; bracts glumaceous, lower with setaceous points. Spikes 5–15, 8–14 mm, terminal male, middle male at top and female below, lower entirely female. Male glumes 5–7 mm, lanceolate-elliptic, pale red-brown with hyaline margins; apex acute. Female glumes 5–6 mm, ovate, pale red-brown, with pale or green midrib and hyaline margins; apex acute or acuminate. Utricles 4–5.5 mm, ovate, plano-convex, many-ribbed, broadly winged, serrate in upper half, pale green-brown; beak 1–1.5 mm, broadly winged below, bifid; stigmas 2; nut oblong-ellipsoid. [details]

2n = 58, 60*, 64*. Translation Rhizome with very long internodes, totally or partially covered by brown scales arising from the nodes, disintegrating into fibres in their proximal part, rarely entire. Stems (8)15–30(40) cm, trigonous, with sharp angles, scabrid in the upper part. Leaves (1)2–3.5(5) mm wide, shorter than the stems, flat, channelled, folded or rolled, in the latter case sometimes narrow (0.4 mm), rough on the margins, not very rigid; ligule (0.8)1–2(3) mm, with raised margins, narrower than the blade, with an obtuse or rounded apex and a generally ciliate margin; without an anteligule; basal sheaths subterranean, similar to the rhizome scales, the aerial ones generally with well-developed blades. Lower bract much shorter than the inflorescence, setaceous, rarely shortly foliaceous, with an open sheath at the base. Spikes arranged in a simple spike (1.8)4–6(7) cm, clustered, the upper one often male, the middle ones androgynous and the lower one usually female. Glumes ovate, acuminate or aristate, light brown when young and reddish-brown ± dark at maturity, the female ones longer than the utricles. Utricles (4)4.5–5.5(8) × (1.1)1.5–2(2) mm, lanceolate or ovate in outline, plano-convex or concavo-convex, spongy at the base, with a broad wing present along most of the length of each margin, prominently nerved, olive-coloured or dark brown at maturity, gradually attenuate into a beak 1.2–1.7(2) mm long, scabrid-serrulate, bifid. Achenes (1.4)1.7–2.1 × (0.6)0.9–1.1(1.2) mm, oblong, obovoid or elliptic in outline, less concave than convex, with the style base persistent as a short column. 2n = 58, 60*, 64*. [details]
