Description Densamente cespitosa, con rizoma robusto. 2n = 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77*, 78, 80, 82, 84. [details]

Description Densely tufted, with a robust rhizome. Fertile stems (40)50-100(120) cm tall, obtusely trigonous, smooth or slightly roughened in the upper region. Leaves (3)5-9(17) mm wide, shorter than the stems, smooth or somewhat roughened near the apex, flat or folded, not very rigid, medium to dark green, matte; ligule (6)9-20(40) mm, generally acute, width equal to or less than the blade; anteligule smaller than the ligule, generally obtuse; basal sheaths light brown, entire or slightly fibrous. Lower bract leafy, longer or shorter than the inflorescence. Male spike generally solitary, very rarely 2, measuring (15)25-45(64) × (2.5)3.5-4.5(6) mm, fusiform; female spikes 2-4, (15)25-40(57) × (3.5)6-8(10) mm, cylindrical, distant, ± pedunculate, the lower one generally pendulous. Male glumes oblong or obovate, ± acute, light brown; female glumes ± oval, acuminate, light brown. Utricles (3.3)4-5(5.8) × 1-2 mm, generally suberect, rarely spreading or spreading-erect, narrowly oval, many-nerved, gradually tapered to a bidentate, rough beak up to 2 mm long. Achenes 2.5-4.2 × 0.8-1.5 mm, elliptic in outline, trigonous. Chromosome numbers 2n = 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77*, 78, 80, 82, 84. [details]
